Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, offers, according to the name, a unique mixture of two countries: Zeeland and Vlaanderen. A special country, offering museums pittoresque villages and large possibilities for walking, cycling, beach visits, water-, and other sports. On the Westside are large dunes and beaches, as well as nature parks like "Zwarte polder" and "Zwin". More east you will find the harbour city Terneuzen, nature parks like Otheeense Kreek and "the Verdronken Land van Saefthinge" and recreation resorts like the Braakman and the Vogel. The nearness of towns like Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent are well palpable and offer the possibility for a nice day out. Besides that large amounts of Belgium people come to visit villages like Axel, Hulst, Sluis, Oostburg and Sas van Ghent. Another big influence in the area has been the 80- years war. Examples of well-kept fortifications are Aardenburg, Sluis, IJzendijke, Retranchement and Hulst. In Sas van Ghent is large pars of underground passages under a fort are being kept. Along the coast of West- Zeeuws Vlaanderen are beach resorts like Breskens, Groede, Cadzand, Nieuwvliet and Retranchement situated. The biggest beach village is Cadzand. Breskens, situated directly next to the Westerschelde, has a large fishers harbour and fish market. The central situated Terneuzen has a large industrial- and yachts harbour. Very interesting is the dock complex, which connects the Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen to the Westerschelde. The Westerscheldetunnel connects since March 15th 2003 Zeeuws Vlaanderen to Zuid- Beveland. This connection was until then maintained by ferry' s. Axel and Hulst are shop areas. This last city is also called the Carcassonne of the north. The high ramparts, bastion and other fortifications testify that of the strategic importance Hulst in the past had. Also the town hall and Saint Willibrordusbasiliek is visiting more than worth. In the border region here much flax is grown.
