Formerly called *Terranova*, it is a meeting and a referring point for the international air and maritime traffic. Of ancient origin, it was founded by the Carthaginians in the 4th century B.C., and grew in importance during the imperial age. It was later the seat of the *Judicata of Gallura* and under the Spaniards was the feud of various families, including the Borgias. Olbia is also famous for its Shopping Centres, nightlife, and the restaurants. Only few kilometres away are the most marvellous beaches of Sardinia's north-east coast: Pittulongu, with its brilliant white sand at only 2 Km, the Saline is about 3 Km, slightly further away are the exclusive beaches of Marinella, Bados, Sos Aranzos, Porto Istana and many other splendid small bays and coves.
