Discover Greece with Starwood A member of the Cyclade island group, the 88-square-kilometer isle of Mykonos is named after the grandson of Greek god Apollo. In the last 20 years, Mykonos has become an international destination for tourists and celebrities who come to enjoy the sunny climate, incomparable beaches, and vibrant nightlife. The islands cerulean waters, and storybook Cycladic architecture enchant upon arrival. In the islands main town of Mykonos, narrow, twisting pebble stone streets lead to small bridges that traverse houses, balconies, stairways, and terraces, all carved out of emblematic white stone. Native shops offer traditional knitted cotton clothing, leatherwork, exquisite wrought jewelry, and artwork while designer boutiques and souvenir shops present alternative shopping options. Interspersed are small but remarkable churches, authentic tavernas, and bars. Surrounded by gently curving sandy beaches, the island offers every type of seaside ambience, from quiet and secluded to active. Select from sporting options such as windsurfing, horseback riding, water-skiing, resort tennis, and scuba diving for underwater caves, shipwrecks, and ancient artifacts dating back to 500 BC. Another draw are the numerous beachfront discos. A popular daytrip is the sacred island of Delos. Just two kilometers away, the island was the birthplace of gods Apollo and Artemis. Today, the island is uninhabited but houses a vast archaeological site that was—after the 9th Century BC—the political and religious center of the Aegean for over a thousand years. Besides the enriching temples and statues, there is a museum with sculptures from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods.
