La Rochelle has had many privileges such as the right to mint its own coins - In 1215 Jean Sans Terre aka John King of England established a mint in La Rochelle which changed its location several times until finally settled in rue Royale des Carmes -which later was renamed rue de la Monnaie -the street in which La Monnaie Art and Spa Hotel is located

La Monnaie Art and Spa has been completely redesigned and offers a new concept of hospitality -invaded by art in the historic heart of La Rochelle - Architect Philippe Lucazeau redesigned the Hotel - He combined the atmosphere of an ancient 17th century house with the enlightened audacity of modern aesthetic innovation
Throughout the hotel artwork is exhibited allowing guests to follow a visual dialogue of art - Artists have left fragments of their memories along the lounges -corridors and rooms and created an atmosphere to contemplate and introspect - The concept merges historic features with a calm ambience and modern facilities
