Dating back more than 2,000 years and formerly known as Mudken, Shenyang is the largest city in northeastern China and the capital of Liaoning Province. The Sheraton Shenyang South City Hotel is located in the National Games Village in Hunnan District. An official athletes and media village, a sports stadium, retail shops, and a central park are just steps away from our hotel. Shenyang Taoxian International Airport (SHE) can be reached by car in less than 10 minutes. At the Shenyang Imperial Palace, 114 formidable buildings have been structured to resemble the Forbidden City. Initially constructed in 1625, the culturally-enriching complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as are the Qing Dynastys imperial tombs Fuling and Zhaoling. Featuring more than 1,700 plants, the peaceful Shenyang Botanical Garden hosts numerous flower shows each year. Mount Qipanshan Scenic Spot is also lovely and tranquil. Astronomy fans can see the worlds oldest-known meteorite weighing about two million tons at the Meteorite Mountain Park. Containing tens of thousands of artifacts, including some of the earliest forms of writing known to man, the Liaoning Provincial Museum is northeast Chinas largest. The Shenyang Steam Locomotive Museum, which houses 16 steam engines, is another unique experience worthy of a visit. For a cultivated dose of ancient art, attend one of Shenyangs popular Er Ren Zhuan or Yangge folk dance performances. The Dawutai Theatre is particularly famous for its Er Ren Zhuan and Chinese skit performances. Also engaging are performances by the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe, the Liaoning Ballet, and the Liaoning Song and Dance Ensemble. Football fans will be impressed by Shenyangs famed traditions. Gourmets should not miss indigenous Liaocai cuisine, as well as tantalizing Korean and Mongolian fare.
