Nestled in southwestern China, Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan Province. Rich with a history dating back to the fourth century B.C., it is also known as The city of abundance, and The St. Regis Chengdu is strategically situated in the heart of its ancient city, surrounded by endless attractions. The citys storied past is revealed by the temples peppered throughout the city, including the Qingyang Taoist Temple. Built during the Zhou dynasty, it is one of the most celebrated Taoist temples in China. Other notable edifices include the beautifully ornate Baoguang Divine Light Temple, which covers 80,000 square meters, and the Wenshu Monastery, a serene complex with 300 Buddha statues, precious relics, and a charming teahouse. Additionally, a visit to Huanglongxi Ancient Town home to magnificently preserved Qing dynasty buildings provides an evocative immersion into Chengdus past. For a curated look at the areas ancient civilizations, there are also a number of museums, such as the Jinsha Site Museum, which presents opulent jade and gold art pieces as well as tools up to 5,000 years old. Modern and past cultures are also on display at the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum, Sanxindui Museum, and Sichuan University Museum, whereas nature takes center stage at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. World renowned for over 100 giant pandas, it is the largest facility of its type. We recommend visiting in the morning, when the pandas are most active.
