Munich is a city of superlatives. Munich has been called the warm-hearted regional capital and the northernmost city in Italy. Its countless beer gardens and street caf s; its many green areas, such as the English Garden, the ancient pastureland on the banks of the Isar; and its vibrant districts, such as Schwabing, Haidhausen, and Giesing, prompt these terms of endearment. Landmarks and historical attractions such as the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady), the Deutsche Museum, the Pinakotheken (art museums), and the Olympic Center also lend the city an irresistible appeal. Munich is the perfect place for anyone who loves mountains, idyllic lakes, and long hikes across fields and pastures. There are many beautiful excursion destinations within easy traveling distance from Munich. Munichs largest park, the English Garden, which stretches from the center of the city to its northern limits, is world-famous. With its approximately 370 hectares (900 acres), it is even bigger than New York Citys Central Park. Conceived in 1785 as a peoples garden in English style, nowadays it has numerous paths and cycling tracks as well as large areas of grass for sunbathing and playing. Four beer gardens, one of them beside the lake named Kleinhesseloher See, invite strollers to relax and quench their thirst. The best views of Munich can be had from the Monopteros, a classicist pavilion built on a small hill, as well as from the highest floors of the Sheraton Munich Arabellapark Hotel. Other highlights worth seeing are the Chinese Tower and the Japanese Teahouse, a present from a Japanese emperor.
