Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located adjacent to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu and the best point by which to explore the beautiful surrounding area. The Lodge is located only 50 meters from the main entrance to the archaeological site. Only the select few who stay at the Lodge have access to the ruins both before and after the throngs of tourists arrive and depart from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. The benefit of exploring the ruins when they are relatively empty is not to be underestimated - and is a key benefit of staying at the Lodge. The magnificent gardens at the Lodge boast stunning views across Machu Picchu and are a popular location for breakfast - as well as champagne at any time. They also offer the perfect location in which to relax during your stay. The gardens are located at the back of the main building - where you can find a great variety of native plants and flowers - including many orchids. Machu Picchu - sacred city of the Incas - sits nearly 2500 meters or 8000 feet above sea level - on top of a ridge between two peaks of different size. The larger peak - called Huayna Picchu - is the one most often seen in photographs of the ruins. Machu Picchu is accessible by a combination of train and bus from Cusco or via a trek along the Inca Trail. Regular bus service from Aguas Calientes train station provides access to both the archaeological site and Belmond Sanctuary Lodge for those who arrive by rail. Most visitors to Machu Picchu take a full day tour and can get a complete idea of the meaning of Machu Picchu. However - if you are able to spend two days trekking around the ruins - it is worth doing so in order to gain more knowledge and understanding of the ruins.
