Funchals downtown area with its shops - restaurants and night life is only a short distance away - as are most of the islands main attractions. Belmond Reids Palace is located 25 kilometers northeast of Madeira Airport - a short ride by car. Madeira and the neighbouring island of Porto Santo are situated in the Atlantic off the West African coast - just north of the Canary Islands. Madeira is only 36 miles long and 14 miles wide - yet its highest point is 1862 meters or 6100 feet.
