Córdoba was the first capital of Argentina and is one of the most important cities in the country. This cultural and commercial center is located at the foothills of Sierra Chica Mountains on the Suquia River, also known as the Primero River. Because of its location, in the geographical center of the country, Córdoba is called the "Heartland of Argentina."
Córdoba is a modern city, yet has many buildings which date back to colonial times. The most notable are the Cabildo (City Hall) and the cathedral in the San Martin Square. The churches of the Compañia de Jesus, San Francisco, and San Roque are also sights to behold.
The Jesuit Block and the Jesuit Estancias, which have been declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO, are additional must-see attractions. Also, Argentina's first university (Universidad Nacional de Córdoba) was founded in this city.
