The capital of Thailand, Bangkok is known by Thais as Krung Thep, or "city of angels". Its location at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River made it a political, social, and economic center even before it was established in the late 1700s. Continually growing, Bangkok began to draw multinational corporations at the end of the twentieth century while still retaining much of its cultural lore. Hundreds of Buddhist temples dot the cityscape along with the humming marketplaces and a rich array of nightlife options.
